How do I configure the desktop manager?

The following sections cover the most common scenarios:

Setting the communications port

Your handheld must be connected to your computer via a USB or serial cable for the Desktop Manager to do anything with it. When you install the Desktop Manager, the default port may be incorrect. If you get a dialog similar to the one shown in Figure 3.6, you need to change the connection settings.

You can change this by selecting the Option menu, and then the Connection Settings menu item. That will display a dialog similar to the one seen in Figure 3.7.

You should know how your handheld is connected to the desktop PC, but generally speaking, most new devices use USB to connect. If your handheld uses a serial cable, make sure you know which COM port it is connected to. You can change the connection in the Connection drop-down list. If your device is already plugged in to your desktop PC, you can click the Detect button and allow the Desktop Manager to attempt to find it. Lastly, if your device uses a USB connection, but your desktop PC does not have a USB port, you can buy a USB-to-serial converter. If you have this, you should check the Enable USB-to-serial Converter Compatibility check box.

Fig 3.7

Connecting to the Email System

If you are integrating with an email system, the desktop manager will attempt to connect to that email system when it is launched. You will see a dialog telling you that the connection is being established.

When connecting to a Microsoft Exchange server using Outlook, you will have to choose the profile that will be used for the connection. In this case, a dialog like Figure 3.8 will be shown. Generally, there will be only one profile in the list and you can simply use that. However, if there is more than one listed and you do not know which one to use, you should ask your IT department.

Fig 3.8

Other Configuration Options

There are only two other things that you can configure in the desktop manager without using one of the applets. The first is the view style of the icons. Like Windows Explorer, you can view the icons of the applets as Large or Small. You can change this setting through the View menu by selecting either the Large Icons or Small Icons menu items.

The other option you can configure is the location of the files that the desktop manager creates during the Intellisync process and for configuration files.

Click the Options menu and select the Data Folder Settings menu item. The dialog, shown in Figure 3.9, shows the current folder being used. To specify another directory, click the Use This Specified Folder radio button and click the Browse button to select a different folder.

A composed message on my handheld has not got sent despite hitting Send.

There can be few reasons why your message did not get sent. Ensure that your handheld radio is turned on. On the BlackBerry handheld theIcon icon turns the radio on. (Select Options Network to check). If no active network is currently selected, simply click the track wheel and select the Select Active Network option and wait for it to find the carrier.

If there is a clock icon next to the unsent message, you may be temporarily out of the wireless network's coverage area. Sometimes if you move closer to a window, coverage is regained.

If there is an X next to the unsent message, a transmission error occurred. Open the message and scroll to the top. The Message Status field will indicate the problem.

If you are notified of a new message and immediately remove the handheld from its holster, the most recent new message is opened and displayed. It is then marked as opened. You can mark the message as unopened from the open message's menu.

If, however, you are notified of a new message and you remove and immediately replace the handheld in its holster, you will cancel the notification and the message will not be opened or marked as opened.

When I choose to file a message in one of my Inbox subfolders the message disappears.

Ensure that your message options are not set to hide your filed messages. On the Home screen, click the Messages icon to display the list of messages on your handheld. Click the track wheel and select Options. Set the Hide Filed Messages field to No.

Why am I receiving duplicate messages? How do I fix it?

A virus cannot affect the handheld since it displays only the text data.

What do I do if I receive the message "User ID and password are invalid", while logging in to BlackBerry Internet Service website?

Verify that the User ID and password are correct. Or Verify the BlackBerry® Internet Service account is active and not locked. Or Contact the carrier and unlock the account.

The following error message is displayed when attempting to send an email message: No email services please connect handheld to your PC. Why is this?

This indicates a missing or corrupted service book. Log in to your BlackBerry® Internet Service account and under Settings, select Service Books. Click Send Service Book. An activation message will appear in the handheld inbox. Go to Options, Service Book and verify the new service book displays Web Client. Select the service book and click the Track wheel to accept it. Email service should function properly.

The user does not have the option to reply or forward an email with BlackBerry® Internet Service account. Why is this?

This indicates that the BlackBerry® Internet Service book has been removed or is no longer valid.

Log on to your account on the BlackBerry® Internet Service site. Under Settings, Select Service Book. Click on Send Service Books. Once you receive the confirmation on your handheld that your account has been activated, go to Options > Service Book. Highlight the web client service book, and click the Track wheel and select Accept. All new messages sent to the BlackBerry® Internet Service account will have the option to reply or forward.
I am able to receive but not send messages via the BlackBerry® Internet Service.

You need to delete the Desktop [CMIME] service book.

Warning: If you use BlackBerry® Enterprise Server or BlackBerry® Desktop Redirector, do not remove the Desktop [CMIME] service book.

From the Home screen, click Options. If you are running BlackBerry® Device Software 4.1 or later, click Advanced Options, then Service Book. If you are running BlackBerry® Device Software 4.0 or earlier, click Service Book. Click the Desktop [SYNC] service book and select Delete. In the Are You Sure? Dialog box, click Delete.

Internet Browser icon does not appear on the device.

Register your device with the wireless network again. Go to http://reliancemobile.blackberry.com and log in to your account. Under Settings, on the left side of the page, click Service Books. Click Send Service Books.

Not able to find PIN or MIN or IMEI of the device.

On the Home screen, click the Options icon. Choose Advanced Options. Click Host Routing Table. Click the Track wheel, then Register Now. If the above tasks do not resolve the problem, contact 9827098270.

After sending a message from my BlackBerry® Internet Service account, I receive a message with the following subject: Warning: could not send message for past 4 hours. Why is this?

You receive this message because it could not be delivered to the recipient's address. This occurs when the messaging server hosting the recipient's email account is unavailable for a period of time. The message will be delivered when the messaging server becomes available. You do not need to take any action, and you will be notified if your message could not be delivered.

Why are some messages sent to the device even though a filter is created?

Filters must be enabled before they apply to your messages. In the messages option, click Email Filters. Verify that the check boxes besides all the filters that you want to apply to your messages are enabled. Verify that the filters are in correct order so they can apply to your messages properly.

How to handle conflicts between the device and desktop e-mail programme while synchronising?

A conflict might occur if you edit the same item on your BlackBerry® device and in your desktop email program before synchronisation occurs.

You can set whether device or desktop email program takes precedence when a conflict occurs. In the messages, option, click Email Reconciliation. Set the ON Conflicts field. You can set this option for each email account.

Can I use Reliance global calling card on a BlackBerry device?

No, Reliance Global Calling card will not work on a BlackBerry device

BlackBerry Security
What securities are applied on the BlackBerry® Internet Service?

BlackBerry® Internet Service implements the following security features: user authentication, content and message encryption and wireless delivery.

User authentication

Subscribers are required to provide a unique user name and password combination to access the BlackBerry® Internet Service. The maximum number of failed logins is three times after which the subscriber is locked out. Subscribers can be ‘unlocked’ by waiting for the lockout period (4 hrs) to end.
If subscribers forget their password, they can enter their PIN number or the unique username and the system sends the password to the handheld.

Content encryption

Information that is exchanged between the web server and the user through BlackBerry® Internet Service is encrypted using SSL. This encryption verifies the content including user names, passwords and other account information.

Message encryption

Messages are encrypted using SSL when supported by the email server (POP over SSL, IMAP over SSL, Outlook Web Access (OWA), and iNotes). If the email server does not support an SSL connection, a standard non-secure HTTP connection is used.

Wireless delivery

Messages that are sent and received between the BlackBerry® Internet Service and the subscriber's handheld are not encrypted. When these messages are transmitted over the wireless network, they are subject to the existing or available network security model(s).
