What is an IMEI number?
The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is a unique 15-digit code in the Mobile which identifies the Mobile handset on network.
Are there any concerns with a Mobile Handset without valid IMEI?
A Mobile handset with no or invalid IMEI number causes security threat against national security.Since a Mobile without valid IMEI number is difficult to trace, it is feared that terrorist groups could use such handsets to evade detection. So, handsets with Invalid IMEI number will not work on any network.
Is it a Regulatory Requirement?
Yes, in the interest of national security, the Department of Telecom (Govt of India) (vide reference NO-20-40/2006/BS-III(PT)(VOL.I)/201 dated 3rd September 2009), has directed all cellular mobile service providers not to allow calls to be made from Mobile handsets with invalid IMEI number after 30th Nov.
How to Check Your Mobile Phone’s IMEI Validity?
Validity of IMEI on Mobile handsets can be found by following the steps as under:
- Type the code *#06# on the screen of Mobile handset.
- A 15 digit IMEI number of the handset will appear on the screen.
- Send a SMS as IMEI < Space> < IMEI number> to 52277 (Toll Free) from any Reliance GSM Handset with valid IMEI Number.
Note: On entering *#06# on Blackberry handsets, the IMEI number that is obtained contains dots (e.g. 123.456.789012345).
For example: If the IMEI number of your handset is "123456789012345", SMS "IMEI 123456789012345" to 52277.
You are requested not to include any dots in the IMEI number while sending the SMS to 52277.
What If your handset doesn't have a valid IMEI number?
In case of Mobile Handset with no IMEI number or invalid IMEI number, you will be required to buy a new Mobile handset which should have a valid IMEI number.
